About the Marching Band

The Tates Creek High School Band Marching Band has existed since the opening of the school in 1965. Each year, students, ages 14 to 18, provide the framework for this performing group that consistently receives top honors in regional, state, and national contests and exhibitions. Under the direction of Aaron Cunningham and Bryan Angel, this key component of the music program has earned the title of Grand Champion in multiple competitions on the region, state, and national level. The following is a listing of several of the band’s more notable accomplishments:

  • Finalist Band Kentucky Music Educators Association State Championship in Class AAAA 2000, 2001, 2002.

  • Regional Finalist, Bands of America Regional Competitions, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008.

  • Finalist, Contest of Champions, Southeast Regional Contest, Murfreesboro, TN 2010

The band performs locally for school events including home football games, pep rallies, and other post-season athletic events. The Marching Band’s exciting, but rigorous, schedule begins in the summer with Band Camp and lasts through most of the fall semester, as the band rehearses diligently to prepare and perfect the year’s Marching Show. The band annually participates in competitions throughout the state and in Music for All Bands of America regional events.

About the Symphonic and Concert Band

About the Symphonic and Concert Band

The Symphonic Band and Concert Band are offered to our students as a course during the school day. Students are divided into two concert bands by audition.  Each of the concert bands has consistently been awarded Distinguished Ratings in Grade IV and Grade VI at the KMEA Concert Band Festival. In addition to performing at concert festival, the concert bands hold concerts in the winter and spring months and play a variety of music for these events.

Tates Creek consistently has a high representation of students in District Honor Band and the Kentucky All-State Band. Students also participate in such extracurricular activities as the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra and the Jazz Arts Foundation Youth Ensemble. Many of the Tates Creek musicians choose to perform in the annual solo and ensemble festival, where they have a great opportunity to expand their musical horizons, while learning from those in the musical profession.

About the Advanced and Concert Percussion Classes

The percussion program encompasses both the Concert Band Advanced Percussion Classes as well as percussion participation with the concert bands. Students will be auditioned each spring for their placement in the appropriate ensemble. Please note that placement in an ensemble does not guarantee students will be in the same or higher ensemble the next year. Students will be reassigned every year based on the ensemble needs and the audition/growth of the individual student. Successful participation in your middle school band program (which includes 8th grade year) in a pre-requisite for participation in the concert band program at Tates Creek High School.
